Russian Foreign Ministry Responds to Japanese Foreign Minister’s Criticism of Victory Day Celebration

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, reacted to the attack of Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimase Hayashi, who said that “the celebration in Russia of Victory Day over militaristic Japan could provoke an” emotional confrontation “between the peoples of the two countries.”

“And what can Japan’s illegal sanctions against the Russian people provoke? A question for the head of the Japanese Foreign Ministry, ”the diplomat wrote today, September 1, in her Telegram channel.

As reported, on June 20, the State Duma immediately adopted in the second and third readings a bill renaming the Day of Military Glory on September 3 the Day of Victory over militaristic Japan and the end of World War II. Amendments were made to the law “On the days of military glory and memorable dates in Russia.” The authors of the initiative noted in the explanatory note to the bill that the wording about the victory over militaristic Japan “should be enshrined at the level of federal law, which reflects the principle of historical justice.”
