Army officers appeared in the early hours of this morning on Gabon’s National Television 24 to announce that they are now in control of the situation in Gabon. The overthrow of outgoing President Ali Bongo puts an end to the reign of the Bongo family which lasted 53 years (from 1967 to 2023). Gabon’s new strongman is General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema. Here is Communiqué No. 1 of the Declaration of the military junta called the Committee for the Transition and the Restoration of Gabonese Institutions (CTRI) which is broadcast on national television.

“In order to guarantee the democratic legitimacy and integrity of Gabon, the Committee for the Transition and the Restoration of Gabonese Institutions strongly denounces the fraudulent results of the recent elections. In this context, we have decided to cancel these results as well as the institutions of the Republic.

Our undeniable commitment lies in the implementation of a transition respectful of the will of the Gabonese people. We are committed to establishing a transparent and democratic process, in full agreement with the aspirations of our people.

This transition will be characterized by the strengthening of anti-corruption mechanisms, the promotion of justice and social equity, as well as responsible and inclusive governance. We will ensure that every Gabonese can freely express their opinions and fully exercise their political rights in accordance with the fundamental principles of democracy.

The Committee for the Transition and the Restoration of Gabonese Institutions calls on the international community, regional organizations and all the actors involved to support our legitimate approach. We will act with determination to restore constitutional order and give our nation hope for a prosperous and equitable future.

Gabon deserves strong and respected institutions capable of responding to the needs and aspirations of our people. Together, we will write a new chapter in the history of our country, forging a bright future for all Gabonese.
