Bust of General Hong Beom-do Yonhap News The Military Academy, which ignited the controversy over the transfer of the bust of General Hong Beom-do, decided on the 31st to send only the bust of General Hong out of the 6 busts of independence activists. It is interpreted as an intention to ease the burden of relocating all the busts of independence activists amid the spread of political and social controversies.

“Among the 6th busts of independence fighters installed inside and at the entrance of Chungmugwan on campus, the bust of General Hong is moved to an appropriate place where the achievements of the independence movement other than military commanders can be well displayed in consideration of the identity of the military commander and respect as an independence fighter at the same time. I decided to do it,” he said. However, he said, “The location and timing of the relocation are under discussion.” The ‘6th place of independence fighters’ are Hong Beom-do, Ji Cheong-cheon, Lee Beom-seok, General Kim Jwa-jin, Lee Hoi-young, and Park Seung-hwan. Among them, the bust of Chamryeong Park is inside Chungmugwan, and the other busts are at the entrance of Chungmugwan.

The Ministry of National Defense recently raised suspicion that General Hong joined the Soviet Communist Party during his lifetime and was involved in the 1921 Free City disaster. However, it is pointed out that this suspicion is in contradiction with the existing official records announced by the Ministry of National Defense.

If you look at the ‘Independence Army, the Liberation Army, and the Armed Forces’ published in 2017 by the Military Compilation Research Institute of the Ministry of National Defense, it explains in detail the disaster in the free city over 7 pages. This publication is the official publication of the Military Compilation Research Institute and is recognized as the official historical interpretation of the Ministry of National Defense.

The Ministry of National Defense raised suspicions of the free city disaster, claiming, “The Independence Army side killed between 400 and 600 people and about 500 people were referred to trial. At that time, General Hong Beom-do participated as a member of the trial committee. However, the Institute of Military Compilation writes that “(at the time of freedom) the number of troops assembled was about 2,000 to 2,300.”

In addition, the Ministry of National Defense mentioned, “There are suspicions that (General Hong) participated as a partisan in the Battle of Bongo-dong and the Battle of Cheongsan-ri,” but the Military Compilation Research Institute used expressions that used the Independence Army unit as a partisan unit several times. Jang Se-yoon, a senior researcher at the Institute of East Asian History at Sungkyunkwan University, said, “Partisan is a general term for ‘irregular guerrillas’.”

Regarding General Hong’s support from the Soviet Union, the Military Compilation Research Institute said, “The Provisional Government dispatched Han Hyeong-gwon as a special envoy to Moscow and agreed to conclude the ‘Korea-ROK Airlift Alliance’ with the Soviet Russian government, and the military support and anti-Japanese united front. I was promised to participate,” he said. General Hong’s cooperation with the Soviet Union was judged as a means for the independence movement.
