Volition Closure: The Fate of the Studio Behind Saints Row

Volition was one of many companies on the brink of extinction when THQ Nordic filed for bankruptcy in 2012, but Koch Media (now known as Plaion) rescued them. Five years later, the developer reunited with the Saints Row franchise when the Embracer Group acquired Koch. That led to last year’s Saints Row reboot, which the Swedish parent company said fell short of expectations. On top of that, Embracer confirmed it would be closing a number of studios after a deal with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund fell through, and it was only a matter of time before tonight’s announcement.

Developers of VolitionconfirmedThe studio will be closed immediately by Embracer Group. That means the studio is finally 30 years old and needs 200+ developers to start looking for work tomorrow, so good luck to everyone.

We’ll see if this at least gets more people to redeem Saints Row as part of September’s PlayStation Plus Essential title, and in doing so, show Embracer Group whether there’s still interest in the franchise.
