Ministry of Health Reports 4 New Deaths from Type B Influenza: Epidemiological Update

The Department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health (ONCE), reports that this epidemiological week 4 new deaths from type B influenza are reported, two men and two women from different regions (Chiriquí and Los Santos), most with metabolic and pulmonary risk factors, none vaccinated for influenza.

According to the report, the figures amount to 42 deaths due to influenza, (14 type B and 28 type A), of which there are 22 men and 20 women, the age range is between 1 month to 88 years, corresponding to the regions from Metropolitana 8, P. Oeste 7, Chiriquí 7, San Miguelito 5, P. Norte 3, Darién 2, Veraguas 2, P. Este 2, Colón, Coclé, Bocas del Toro, C. Ngäbe Buglé, Los Santos and imported one each.

90% (38/42) had risk factors such as: malnutrition, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, pulmonary, renal, neurological, immunosuppression, among others; and 85% (36/42) consigned without vaccine.

Health personnel have applied 1,433,145 flu shots

According to information provided by the Expanded Immunization Program, a total of 1,433,145 doses of the influenza vaccine have been applied from April 12 to August 28, 2023; 1,049,835 have been placed by MINSA and a total of 383,310 doses by the CSS.

Panama Metro with an application of 251,644 doses of influenza; West Panama with 200,439; Chiriquí with 182,251, and Coclé with 121,752 are the regions that have placed the largest number of vaccines against this virus.
