The 70mai Omni X200 DVR is the brainchild of 70Mai, which is part of the Chinese tech giant Xiaomi. Therefore, it is not surprising that even in such a device as simple in its functionality as a car recorder, its creators stuffed the “brains” of a smartphone. It turned out to be a very interesting gadget that can bring this type of auto electronics to a whole new level.
Even the most jaded and satisfied gadget lover’s form factor DVR 70mai Omni X200 will inevitably arouse at least curiosity. For some, its appearance evokes associations with an egg about 100 mm high and 51 mm in diameter. To the author of these lines, the appearance of the device was reminiscent of the design of the R2D2 robot from Star Wars, which was stuck upside down to the windshield in the car. This impression is reinforced by the camera lens of the device. Which, as it turns out, is driven by a small built-in servomotor.
To be more precise, the half of the “egg” facing down can rotate around the vertical axis of the device. It periodically rotates on its own, at the command of the algorithm sitting in the “brains” of the DVR.
However, more about that later, but first let’s get to know the exterior of the Omni X200 better. In addition to the lens, on its rounded body there is a small monitor and just a couple of buttons for turning on and configuring the main functions of the device. There are not many of them, so you won’t have to learn the settings for a long time. When mounting a car recorder, an elegant round plate is glued to the windshield of the car, which acts as a bracket. The gadget itself is installed on it with one movement. It is also easy to remove, which makes it possible to take it with you while parking.
We connect it via USB power to the on-board power supply, the kit already has both a cord and a cigarette lighter socket, and then the fun begins. An emoji appears on its screen in the form of a muzzle of either a dog or some kind of teddy bear. Which, by the way, has a funny facial expression and does not let passengers get bored with their antics. During my first rides with the Omni X200, my kids followed this creature with hypnotic attention. Everyone tried to be the first to spot the next grimace spontaneously appearing on the face screen. By the way, there are quite a lot of such grimaces for different “occasions” of the DVR.
If you think that with this registrar, after installation and connection, you can do exactly the same as with any of its predecessors, I have to disappoint you. You can’t just point the lens where you need it, adjust the quality of the shooting and forget about it. To make it work, you need to download the 70mai proprietary application to your smartphone, register in it, activate Wi-Fi on your phone, get a password and use it to “make friends” Omni X200 with your “dialer”. After that, his camera will be at your service, recording video with Full HD quality (1920x1080p). Further, you will no longer need to peer into the small screen on the registrar itself. The video will begin to flow continuously on the monitor of your smartphone. And through the application it will be possible to control the lens of the registrar. It rotates 360° by an electric motor, allowing you to point the camera in any direction. It can shoot the road ahead, and what is happening in the cabin, and fix what is happening on the side of the car.
I note that giving a smartphone, temporarily turned into an Omni X200 remote control, to the kids in the back seat, you are guaranteed to occupy their attention for at least an hour. As the saying goes, “parents take note.” It’s nothing that you will later become the owner of 128 GB of memory built into the recorder, filled with the most stupid photos and videos of your person in the history.
Fortunately, they are fixed in the memory of the Omni X200 cyclically, erasing previous entries. Except, of course, “emergency” unkillable files created by the command of the triggered G-sensor of the registrar, which reacts both to concussion during an accident and to small blows to the car body during parking. The really wanted videos and photos taken by the Omni X200 can be downloaded from it via the app. The latter, by the way, can even edit photo files.
For example, it can be superimposed “arrows” pointing to certain captured objects. Or mark the distance between them. All the results of photo and video recording are easily “distilled” through the 70mai application into the phone’s memory. After that, they can be presented to the traffic police officer and posted on the social network. Moreover, the wide aperture and smart image processing algorithms give excellent quality at the output. The video, both during the day and at night, is quite bright and clear. Car numbers are read perfectly – both in daytime and at night shooting. And the presence of a GPS module allows you to “sew” coordinates to the footage.
Speaking of traffic police! I must say that in the “brains” of the Omni X200 a curious self-learning algorithm is “sewn up”, which allows us to reasonably consider the device as the owner of artificial intelligence. The first acquaintance with its manifestation somewhat strained with its unexpectedness, I must admit, both me and the policeman who stopped my car at that moment.
The traffic police officer approached, introduced himself through the open window, I climbed for the documents and at that moment the Omni X200 suddenly buzzed with an electric motor and stared with its lens at the law enforcement officer. I knew that the electronic “brains” of the gadget are able to analyze what is happening around the car using the ADAS algorithm. And if they sense some kind of danger from a pedestrian, motorcyclist or other vehicle, they can point a camera in his direction and even issue a voice warning to the driver about an emergency overboard. Albeit in English, but nevertheless warn. And the traffic police officer was not warned about anything like that. He definitely saw that the camera took him “on sight” without any participation on my part.
The incident obviously made a strong impression on him. It was not for nothing that he then stared after me intently all the time until he disappeared from the rear-view mirror … However, the Omni X200 can not only scare the police, but also work as a guard in the parking lot. If someone knocks on the car or tries to open it, the DVR camera will react: it will turn in the direction of the “movement” and start filming what is happening. At the same time, a message about the incident will be sent to the smartphone of the owner of the car.
In general, the gadget is really useful and advanced. We repeat once again, with a very worthy shooting quality. He is definitely on Ozone and in DNSwe checked. Considering the set of properties of the Omni X200, its price – about 13-14 thousand rubles with a minimum built-in memory of 32 Gb – does not seem high. For good “brains”, albeit artificial, it is not a sin to pay fairly.
