Cooperation in R&D and Commercialization of Ultra-Large Offshore Wind Power: Doosan Energy and Korea Midland Power Join Forces

Cooperation in R&D and commercialization of ultra-large offshore wind power of 20MW or more
Promote the creation of large-scale commercial complexes to vitalize the ecosystem

[에너지신문] Doosan Energy and Korea Midland Power are joining hands to jointly promote offshore wind power projects.

The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding on the 31st to jointly develop next-generation offshore wind power and promote offshore wind power projects. Officials from both companies attended the signing ceremony, including Kim Ho-bin, president of Korea Midland Power, and Jung Yeon-in, president of Doosan Energy.

Under the agreement, the two companies agreed to cooperate throughout the offshore wind power value chain, including R&D, demonstration, and commercialization of next-generation offshore wind power of 20MW or higher.

In addition, to revitalize the domestic offshore wind power ecosystem, it will also promote the creation of a large-scale commercialization complex and joint advancement into overseas markets. Doosan Energity will carry out design, production, and demonstration of next-generation offshore wind power, while Korea Midland Power will be in charge of supporting related technologies and promoting projects.

“In order to vitalize the domestic offshore wind power ecosystem, it is important to go beyond product development and find business opportunities to realize it,” said Jeong Yeon-in, CEO of Doosan Enerability. We will do our best to make it happen,” he said.

Ho-bin Kim, CEO of KOMIPO, said, “The domestic wind power industry has many shortcomings compared to advanced wind power countries in overall areas such as localization of equipment and materials, establishment of certification complexes, and establishment and maintenance of behind-the-scenes infrastructure.” We will focus our company-wide capabilities to contribute to the revitalization of the wind power industry ecosystem by commercializing it.”

Since 2021, KOMIPO has been working on the construction of a 100MW Jeju Hallim offshore wind farm with KEPCO, KEPCO E&C, Doosan Energity, and Hyundai E&C. Doosan Energity signed a contract to supply equipment and materials to manufacture and install 18 units of 5.5 MW offshore wind power in this complex, followed by a long-term maintenance contract.

It is expected that cooperation between the two companies will secure competitiveness in domestic equipment and materials in a market dominated by overseas wind turbine manufacturers, revitalize the stagnant domestic wind power industry ecosystem, and open opportunities to jointly advance into overseas wind power markets in the future.
