Barely 17 years old, the young Ruth Orkin decides to leave the family home, located in Los Angeles, to cross the country and reach the East coast of the United States. A long journey through the most major american cities, which the young artist immortalizes through 350 exceptional photographs. This solo trip from West to East is a real epic for the teenager, at a time when the independence of women, security, means of transport were not the same.
Ruth Orkin announced her plan to visit the New York World’s Fair. She therefore chained buses, cars and trains to reach her goal. At each stage, the young artist jumps on her bike, to explore the cities that stand on her route. Chicago, Boston, San Francisco, Washington, Philadelphia… In these streets, Ruth Orkin finds new worlds, fascinating landscapes. She captures with her camera the streets, the life scenes, the people she meets. She also has a lot of fun with her self-portraits, and her bicycle, which she stages in surprising and amusing shots.
