Oppenheimer Film Review: A Historical Error and Rave Reviews

Oppenheimer has achieved a staggering 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is receiving a shower of rave reviews. However, even the greats can make mistakes and recently a rather serious historical error which some experts seemed to have identified within the film.

As we have told you, some parts of the film are slightly romanticized – such as the scene of the poisoned apple intercepted by the future father of the atomic bomb before being eaten – but it nonetheless tells a true and well-known story.

The mistake that many fans seem to have noticed, however, concerns a detail that has not escaped the most attentive: it is the American flag waved by the crowd after Oppenheimer’s speech for the success of the Trinity test. The banner, in fact, has 50 stars, while in that historical period it should have had only 48.

The 50-star flag represents all US states, including Hawaii and Alaska, which only became official states in 1959. So, to be historically accurate, the banner in the film was supposed to have 48 stars. Despite this minor slip-up, the film continues to receive rave reviews, with many viewers calling it one of the best films ever made.

We know that details matter, especially when it comes to representing historical events, but given the final result we can forgive the good Nolan for this time … or not? By the way, here’s the story of JR Oppenheimer and the Manhattan Project.
