It’s a piece of news that could easily be mistaken for a mediocre joke. But she’s right. Guillaume Hoarau will soon be playing for FC Muri-Gümligen, which is involved in the interregional second division. Bruno Hunziker, the president of the Bern association, confirmed a corresponding message from Nau.ch to this newspaper.
Hoarau should become an incomparable attraction for Bern’s amateur football scene. At 39, the five-time France international may well have passed his prime. Of course, the former YB leader is still a “figure”. Over 271,000 people follow him on Instagram, and he acts as a Champions League expert for the French-language version of Blue Sport.
He enjoys a kind of legendary status
A few weeks ago he returned to Switzerland from La Réunion, he moves primarily in Freiburg, Bern and Zurich, where his girlfriend, the Aargau top model Manuela Frey, lives. At the beginning of last week he gave an interview to “Blick” in which he said that he could imagine playing for the seniors of FC Länggasse in the future. The fact that he is now joining another Bernese amateur club, FC Muri-Gümligen, is not so surprising.
In the YB environment, the passionate musician enjoys a kind of legend status. From 2014 to 2020 he played at the Wankdorf Stadium, then known as the Stade de Suisse, and when he left, a book was published that tells his story and is entitled “Guillaume Hoarau – Bern Taken by Storm”.
In Bern he was at times something like a king: Guillaume Hoarau.

Muri-Gümligen President Hunziker says that Hoarau will not be able to take part in every training session or in all games due to his various commitments. “But he will be there as often as possible. And he doesn’t just want to play a little bit – he wants to win, he wants to help our boys.”
The 2nd league inter club does not take any financial risks, assures Hunziker, a lawyer, when asked. «We have always worked seriously; we value that. Guillaume will not strain our budget, »says the President, who is a friend of the French. “He’s definitely not coming to us to make money.”
