Jakarta –
Hundreds of passengers failed to fly and were stranded at airports around the world. The shock was that there was a disruption to UK flight data.
Reported from BBC, Thursday (31/8/2023), the disruption caused the cancellation of many flights since Monday. The National Air Traffic Service (NATS) said the flight plans could not be processed by the system.
Passengers have been warned to anticipate disturbances that will continue to occur.
One passenger said he and his young children had to sleep on the airport floor after their flight was grounded.
On the other hand, Nats claims there are no signs of a cyber attack, the cause of the system failure. The incident will be investigated by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).
“Initial investigation into this matter indicates that the issue is related to some of the flight data we have received,” said Nats chief executive Martin Rolfe.
“Our systems, both primary and backup, responded by suspending automated processing to ensure that no safety-related misinformation is passed to air traffic controllers or impacts other air traffic systems,” he added.
He said the problem was very rare. He was sure this situation would not happen again.
“So we have procedures in place to ensure that if this happens again, we can sort it out very quickly,” he said.
When asked about reports that flight plans submitted by French airlines might be the cause of the problem, Rolfe said he did not wish to speculate at this point.
He said Nats was working with CCA to provide a preliminary report to the Minister of Transport and that the report’s conclusions would be published.
The Department for Transport said it had approved night flights to all UK airports it was arranging to reduce the backlog of flights in Britain.
