Approval Granted for Fourth and Final Unit at Egypt’s Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant by Egyptian Council of Ministers

On Wednesday, the Egyptian government announced the approval of the construction of the fourth and final unit at the Dabaa nuclear power plant, with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts.

A statement by the Egyptian Council of Ministers quoted the Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority as having agreed to grant permission to establish the last unit at the Dabaa plant.

The authority said that “the safety of people, the environment and property on all Egyptian lands has been verified against potential dangers.”

She stated that she had verified the readiness of the unit after a comprehensive inspection between July 30 and August 2, when it was confirmed that there was nothing preventing the construction process.

In June 2022, Russia’s state-owned nuclear energy company, Rosatom, said it had received approval from an Egyptian regulatory body to begin construction of the country’s first nuclear plant, which consists of four units with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts each.

According to the Egyptian Nuclear Regulatory Authority, permission was granted to establish the first unit in June 2022, the second unit in October 2022, and the third unit in March 2023.

Egypt and Russia signed an agreement to start work on the Dabaa nuclear power plant during a meeting in Cairo between President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in 2017.
