The Legacy of the Hasty Withdrawal: Reflecting on the Second Anniversary of US Troops Leaving Afghanistan

The second anniversary of the hasty withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan

Today, two years ago, that is, on August 30, 2021, as the last US military transport plane took off from Kabul International Airport, the nearly 20-year-long war in Afghanistan ended with the hasty withdrawal of US troops. This “longest war in history” of the United States has brought huge disasters to Afghanistan.

Today, although the war is over, the wounds inflicted by the United States on Afghanistan are far from healed. Afghanistan is still facing a serious economic and humanitarian crisis, and the United States is undoubtedly the main culprit.

According to official statistics from the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. spent more than $2 trillion on the Afghan war in the nearly 20 years of the war in Afghanistan. More than 800,000 U.S. military personnel have served in Afghanistan. The military cost of the war alone was about $837 billion.

Former U.S. President George W. Bush, who launched the war in Afghanistan, once said that helping the Afghan people to build “a free society” is in the strategic interest of the United States. However, the US invasion did not achieve the “freedom” it portrayed, but brought death and poverty to Afghanistan. The U.S. military has killed innocent people indiscriminately in Afghanistan for nearly 20 years, bringing huge disasters and lasting pain to the local people. The long-term war has continuously destroyed the infrastructure in Afghanistan, making it difficult for the Afghan economy to develop and people’s lives to be difficult.

In addition, during the war in Afghanistan, the United States defined terrorist organizations according to its own needs and selectively countered terrorism in order to achieve its own geopolitical goals. As a result, the number of terrorist organizations in Afghanistan increased from single digits to more than 20. This not only harms the Afghan people, but also endangers the security of neighboring countries.

After the U.S. military hastily withdrew, it continued to impose sanctions on Afghanistan, seized Afghan overseas assets, and prevented humanitarian aid funds from flowing into Afghanistan.
