20,000 people came to take part in the celebration from eighteen different nationalities this year. Dressed in white, the participants quickly turned red from head to toe. Many of them were equipped with swimming goggles to prevent the acidity of the tomatoes from stinging their eyes.
To ensure the security of the event, 200 Guardia Civil agents and a helicopter were mobilized. The mayor of Buñol Virginia Sanz stressed that the Tomatina was a “safe and fun party”.
La Tomatina was declared a festival of International Tourist Interest in 2002. Its origin dates back to 1945 with a simple battle between young people who were bored at the end of the summer.
Extensive cleaning of streets and buildings is carried out after the party.
