The Big Apple wants all its taxis and limousines to gradually go green so that they will all become electric by 2030.
The end of the legendary yellow Ford Crown Victoria, and their imposing thermal V8 is apparently near… That said, it has already been a while since American sedans have been in the majority in the New York megalopolis. They have long shared the city’s large one-way boulevards with more compact and economical vehicles thanks to their hybrid engines. But the city wants to go even further in terms of electrification and mobility.
80,000 electric taxis by 2030
New York City Hall has just signed an agreement with the city’s taxis and limousines. The objective being that these go all-electric by 2030. In total, just under 80,000 vehicles are affected. 5% of them will have to switch to ions in 2024, 15% in 2025, a quarter in 2026, 45% in 2027, 65% in 2028, 85% in 2029 and all of them in 2030.
More accessible to all
But New York is not only keen to make its taxis more green and ecological thanks to this project called “Green ride”, or “green journey” in French. The American megalopolis is also keen to make them easier to use by all customers. In addition to making them all-electric, the city also wants to make them compatible with the needs of people with reduced mobility.
Only electrified by 2035
New York is not at its first attempt in terms of electrifying its car fleet. The city is already one of the areas with the most electric cars in the United States. But obviously, New York wants to do even better. Last year, the entire US state set up a project with the aim of selling only electrified vehicles on its territory by 2035. A timing more or less equivalent to that of the Old Continent, except that in Europe, we are talking about 100% electric, not just hybridization…
