Here we are ! Organized in France, the 2023 Rugby World Cup begins on Friday September 8, 2023 and will delight us for seven weeks.

The writing ofAt the time of Rugby has actively prepared in recent months to make you experience the tournament intensely from the inside and in particular the course of the XV of France which it will follow, step by step, throughout the competition.

In order to accompany you even more effectively in the follow-up of this World Cup, At the time of Rugby also calls on three “experts”: Gurthrö Steenkamp, Didier Camberabero et David Gerard.

Gurthrö Steenkamp, the champion of the world!

In the choice of consultants who will accompany us throughout the competition, it was not allowed not to attach the services of a world champion to us! Our choice quickly fell on Gurthrö Steenkampa former pillar with a magnificent career and a very endearing personality.

The 42-year-old South African is well known in France. After enjoying the heyday of the Cheetahs and Bulls in South Africa, this excellent left pillar (1.89m; 120 kg) joined the ranks of Toulouse Stadium for the 2011-2012 season. He won the Top 14 at the end of this first season, composing the first line in solid gold of the Rouge et Noir with Census Johnston et William Saves.

He was there when in the last training session before the final against Toulon, the pack of Toulouse forwards broke the yoke in the middle of a scrum session. “It’s not a legend, we really broke it. It was the day before the final. When I saw the power we were capable of developing and so much determination, I understood that Toulon would have no chance the next day, ”comments the South African.

After his Toulouse adventure, Steenkamp ended his career at French Stadium (2017-2018) before becoming a coach. He is currently in charge of the La Rochelle scrum, and the forwards of the Espoirs.

Internationally, Steenkamp wore the Springbok jersey 53 times from 2004 to 2014 and played in the 2007 and 2011 World Cups. He was world champion in 2007.

Didier Cambérabero, the record holder

Cambérabero, here is a name that smells of rugby. Guy, Lilian then Didier Cambérabero were solid residents of the XV of France at two different times, the first two in the sixties, the third from 1982 to 1993.

In this family, it is the son of Guy and nephew of Lilian who interests us: Didier Camberbero. Aged 62, this former opening half made the heyday of La Voulte, his training club, Béziers, Nîmes, Grenoble and Perpignan.

Small size with a strong character, he remains forever associated with the magnificent course of the XV of France during the first edition of the World Cup. It was in 1987 in New Zealand. During this tournament that he was not supposed to play and for which he was called in disaster on D-Day for the departure of the players, he sparkled.

In particular, it marks 30 points against the modest team of Zimbabwe, making him the French record holder for the number of points scored in a World Cup match. A record that still stands!

During this first edition, the XV of France of Blanco and Sella did wonders. He beat Australia in the semi-finals in a team match before falling in the final against the unbeatable All Blacks.

Hidden Oval in the staff

Since the creation of our media, many of you have enjoyed the acerbic, caustic and so humorous pen of the famous Masked Oval every week. Although he has already made us angry with half of the rugby planet and he is very expensive for us (!!!!), we still have a little bit of indulgence left to not prevent him from following this Coupe du world and above all a lot of humanity so as not to deprive you of your pen during the competition.
Ovale Masqué will follow all the matches of the XV of France with its legendary gall and even has a few surprises in store for you!

David Gérard with the “Tom Thumb”

Finally, At the time of Rugby is proud to have the collaboration of a third thief, the excellent David Gerard.

This solid second line played at Stade Toulousain from 2000 to 2005, winning a French championship and two European cups before heading to England to wear the Northampton Saints tunic (2005-2007). He then played two seasons at Racing 92 before becoming a coach. After having coached the forwards of Béziers and Lyon, he was appointed coach of Montauban for the 2021-2022 season.

He is participating in this 2023 World Cup with the staff of the Portugal. The coach Patrice Lagisquet entrusted him with the task of training the forwards of the “Lobos” and it is therefore from the inside that David Gérard will make us live the course of this selection which looks like Tom Thumb with Chile.
