NEW JERSEY — The 9/11 memorial service in Monmouth County, New Jersey, one of the dates marking the day that marked the nation’s history in a terrorist act in New York City, will remember people who they lost their lives on this day.
The ceremony will take place at the Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook, 460 Ocean Boulevard, Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey, on Monday, September 11 at 8:00 a.m.
“The County’s September 11 Memorial Service is an opportunity to remember all those who lost their lives during and after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001,” said Commissioner Thomas A. Arnone. “We invite everyone to join us in honoring the 147 Monmouth County families who lost loved ones on that tragic day.”
“It’s important to take time to honor those we lost on September 11, 2001. The Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook provides a perfect space for residents and visitors to reflect on and remember the 147 lives lost in Monmouth County,” he said. Commissioner Ross F. Licitra, liaison with the Monmouth County Park System. “The Board of County Commissioners is honored to host our Memorial Ceremony at this site.”
At 266 feet, the Mount Mitchill Scenic Lookout in the Atlantic Highlands sits on the highest natural elevation on the Atlantic coast (excluding islands) from Maine to the Yucatan Peninsula, providing beautiful views of Sandy Hook, Sandy Hook Bay, Raritan Bay and the New York skyline. . This 12-acre site is also home to the Monmouth County 9/11 Memorial. Sculptor Franco Minervini’s sculpture of an eagle clutching a beam of the World Trade Center is a solemn tribute to those who lost their lives during the events of September 11.
In 2002, the Monmouth County September 11 Committee was formed and began making plans for an appropriate tribute to the victims, heroes, and events of September 11, 2001. The group’s first responsibility was to select a memorial that fit into the scenic viewpoint of Mount Mitchill. The committee then embarked on a major fundraising campaign to finance the monument. By mid-summer 2005, the group had surpassed their goal, raising $296,000. Ongoing donations will support the maintenance and upkeep of the monument.
