Pope Francis sent a letter of greetings to the French entrepreneurs who recently met in Paris, saying that the economic leader is “a participant in the public good, a descendant of Saint Joseph the Carpenter”.
(Vatican News Network) “When I think of entrepreneurs, the first word that comes to mind is public interest. Entrepreneurs are protagonists of development and the pursuit of well-being. You are the main engine of wealth, prosperity and happiness for all.” Professor Pope Francis said so in a message to French entrepreneurs. They met at the Longchamp racecourse in Paris on August 28-29, at which the Pope’s message was read.
In his message, the Pope pointed out that the media rarely speaks about the plight and pain of entrepreneurs whose companies have failed. Yet, as the book of Job teaches, success is not “synonymous with virtue and goodness,” nor is misfortune synonymous with sin. Misfortune happens to the just and righteous.
The church understands the pain of a good entrepreneur, and the church accepts him, accompanies him, and thanks him. “The Church embraced businessmen from the very beginning,” the Pope noted. The Bible and the Gospels talk about money and transactions many times, and many of the good stories about salvation also talk about economics, for example: the merchant who found the pearl of great value. For another example, the father in the parable of the prodigal son in Luke’s Gospel is very rich, and he may be a landowner.
The way to participate in the public good today is to create jobs, especially for young people, the Pope said. “Have faith in the youth,” the Pope called. “Every new job created is wealth that is shared. Wealth does not flow into the bank to earn interest, but is invested so that new generations can work, so that Their lives are more dignified.”
The good entrepreneur knows his workers like the good shepherd in the gospel because he understands their work. The Pope fears that the entrepreneur is out of touch with his company’s business and thus “invisible” to his workers. The Pope therefore urges entrepreneurs never to lose sight of their calling: “On that day you were attracted by the smell of your factory, delighted by touching your products with your own hands, satisfied by seeing the benefits of your services. In this regard, You are like the Great Saint Joseph, like Jesus, who was a carpenter for most of his life: “The Word became a carpenter”, familiar with the smell of wood.”
The Pope finally reminded: “Without new entrepreneurs, our land will not be able to withstand the impact of capitalism.” The Pope expressed his gratitude to the entrepreneurs.
