The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is interested in developing a supersonic passenger plane that could increase the speed of current transatlantic travel.
The entity’s recent studies visualize a potential market in 50 routes that can be covered with speeds between Mach 2 and Mach 4 (2,450-4,770 km/h). Its implementation would allow a flight between New York and London to take approximately 90 minutes.

A current passenger plane reaches speeds of 965 km/h, which represents 80% of the speed of sound. NASA takes this information as a reference point for its ambitious goal.
The NASA program for the trips of the future
NASA’s Advanced Aerial Vehicle Program (AAVP) has awarded two contracts to a pair of teams to conceptualize the innovative and highly anticipated supersonic spacecraft.
Boeing leads the first of the teams along with renowned entities such as Exosonic, Georgia Tech GE Aerospace, Rolls-Royce North American Technologies and Aerospace Systems Design Laboratory.

The second team is led by Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems, adding to its ranks Blue Ridge Research and Consulting, Boom Supersonic and again, Rolls-Royce North American Technologies.
