Volvo’s Electric MPV: Reviving the Forgotten Minivan Segment with the EM90

The Swedish Volvo is developing an MPV model with an electric drive. It is the first time that Volvo will build a monovolume or ‘one-volume’.

We traditionally know Volvo as a brand that has mainly built break models and also SUV cars in recent decades. Now the manufacturer surprises everyone with the plans to develop an MPV. MPVs or single-volume cars were especially popular in the nineties and the nillies with models such as the Renault Espace or the Volkswagen Sharan.

Over the past 15 years, these models have clearly lost their popularity and have been replaced by SUVs that come in all sizes and weights. Now Volvo is reviving this ‘forgotten’ segment by launching a minivan under the name EM90.

Premium

Volvo shows a first image of the EM90 equipped with a panoramic roof and a vertical rear section. It seems that the car will have a modular interior and will also have seven seats. Because Volvo indicates that it is a 100% electrically powered model, we also expect a completely flat floor, which creates even more possibilities to adapt the interior (modularly) to the needs of the user.

Volvo also wants to say that a premium finish will be provided and the interior will feel like a ‘Scandinavian living room’. The new model will be officially unveiled in mid-November, when more technical data will be available on drive and driving range.
