In acute heart failure, the heart pumps less well and fluid is retained. Every year there are more than 30,000 hospital admissions in the Netherlands. ‘These patients are often seriously ill when they end up in hospital and the only type of treatment is diuretic medication (medication that causes the patient to lose excess fluid, ed.). Patients are often short of breath because the fluid collects in various places in the body, for example behind the lungs,’ the UMCG writes.
