Rune was seeded number four in this year’s US Open. The exit in the first round on Monday was therefore a huge surprise.
Spanish Carballés Baena is ranked number 63 in the world. This is the first time the 30-year-old has beaten a player who is in the top ten in the world.
Rune was far from his own top level. He appeared to be struggling with injuries for large parts of the match against Carballes Baena. The 20-year-old Dane was clearly hampered in his movements, and the seasoned Spaniard took advantage of that.
Eventually Rune seemed very disappointed in his body language. He had nothing to stand against, and the match ended in a relatively clear defeat.
Thus, there will be no Scandinavian duel between Rune and Casper Ruud in New York.
