Teenage Boy Killed in Shooting at Easton Town Center
Columbus, Ohio – A teenage boy is believed to be the victim of a fatal shooting that occurred at Easton Town Center on Sunday evening. Columbus police have stated that the incident was an “isolated incident” and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Two 13-year-olds have been arrested in connection with the shooting. One has been charged with delinquency murder, while the other has been charged with obstructing justice. Both will have their first court appearances on Monday afternoon in Franklin County Juvenile Court.
Sgt. Joseph Albert confirmed that the victim, whose age has not been confirmed but is believed to be under 18, died at Mount Carmel East hospital at 6:50 p.m. The victim’s identity will not be released until their family has been notified.
Initially, there were reports of a second person being injured, but it was later confirmed that only one person was shot. Dispatchers initially stated that one person was taken to Mount Carmel East hospital and another to Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. However, it was later revealed that the ambulance diverted to Mount Carmel East due to the patient’s condition.
A Columbus police officer, who was working at the mall, was able to locate the victim within 60 seconds of the shooting and provide immediate medical treatment, including CPR. The shooting took place outside the main mall building, near the AMC Theater, contrary to initial reports of it happening inside the mall.
More than 70 law enforcement personnel from multiple agencies responded to the scene. Multiple firearms were recovered, and shell casings were found and collected as evidence. The mall has a strict no weapons policy.
Mayor Andrew J. Ginther and Chief Elaine Bryant addressed the community, promising to hold those responsible accountable. They also called on state legislators to take action on gun safety regulations. Ginther assured the public that Easton and other shopping centers in the area are safe.
Witnesses reported hearing a gunshot and seeing people running for safety. A security officer noted that there were many teens and young adults at the mall on Sunday, more than usual. The incident occurred on National Cinema Day, with the movie theater offering discounted tickets.
Patrons at the mall were initially asked to shelter in place while law enforcement officers evacuated the area store by store. The large law enforcement response ensured the safety of employees and shoppers.
The ramps from Interstate 270 to Easton Way, which were closed during the investigation, have since reopened. Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the Columbus Police Homicide Unit or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers.
The tragic shooting highlights the increasing involvement of juveniles in shootings and violence throughout the city. Mayor Ginther and Chief Bryant are determined to address this issue and ensure the safety of the community.
