Living in Serene Surroundings with Nearby Tennis Club and Cottage in Svátý Jan pod Skala

Surrounded by mature trees, but also overlooking wooded hillsides, the place is so soothing (if the noise from the construction site in the distance doesn’t interfere) that every visitor must understand how much they enjoy spending time here. So much so that they don’t even go to the cottage in Svátý Jan pod Skala so much anymore.

And to add to the comfort – the son built a house for himself and his visitors on the site of the former garage next to the villa. They see each other so often. But also thanks to the fact that everyone meets on the nearby tennis courts. More precisely, at the tennis club.

“It’s really nice here. Although I was once born in Žižkov, as a fourteen-year-old I liked to wander around Prague, and once in winter I walked – perhaps even along this very street – and thought how beautiful it is here and what it would be like to live here. And it worked.

I’ve already found a route where I don’t go uphill or downhill. It suits me to walk on the plain,” adds the recently eighty-year-old actor and author, who has lived at this address for over forty years. Of course, people recognize him, and recently a lady stuck his head under an umbrella to make sure it was really him.

Club facilities

Mrs. Adriana walks to the sports club to play tennis twice a week. “Mostly doubles, and I also use it as a meeting place. In addition, two years ago, our son acquired a club (DTJ – Dělnická télóvychovná jednota Santoška) for rent and recently set up a gym there. He played competitive tennis and studied sports management, so it all came together nicely at the age of thirty-four. We enjoy helping him improve, and so do our friends. The girls there also play in the 1st league in netball,” Mrs. Sobotová praises the family’s sporting spirit.

“Some people think I bought the whole thing and put my son in the gym, but that’s not true at all. So I’ll leave them alone. But it upsets Laďa, because it seems that his father had to arrange the work for him,” he smiles.

“But we’re still not really there, regardless of the fact that we’re still playing Visiting Day at Miloslav Šimek. With the old group – Jirka Krampol, Miluška Voborníková, Viktor Sodoma, Petr Jablonský, Jana Mařasová…,” Ms. Adriana calculates, and her husband adds: “But I said I wouldn’t go any further than Brno. Every month we play in Semafor. And I’m already thinking about the October performance in Prague’s Ypsilonka. I promised director Schmid. He always just pushed me on stage – and say something… This time it will be something about swing.”

Comfort without interruption

Spouses Sobots renovated together years ago. And successfully.

“My wife is in charge of everything. And it suits me because I’m already lazy. And I also don’t care a bit about everything and I will never resist. The truth is that my wife doesn’t force me to do anything,” smiles the devotee of the swimming pool near the house, saying that the change he welcomed was the replacement of chlorinated water in the pool with salt water.

“Once in a while they bring us bags and the device dispenses the salt to us. It was perhaps the best we could do. Water doesn’t really spoil. Before, I was always luxuriating, delivering expensive tablets,” says Mrs. Adriana.

“And we have heating – I wouldn’t get into cold water. I used to swim there and back maybe a hundred times. I did three pools yesterday,” adds her husband.

The painter and musician created a cheerfully colorful home for his family

Luděk Sobota not only relaxes on the terrace, which was also created relatively recently and thus enlarged the plain behind the house and above the slope, but his books – Parasites among us and the older Bare and embarrassing breathing – were also written here. “That was a book on holotropic breathing that I really went through. About fourteen years ago. An interesting experience, but it was also enough.’

At one time, the Sobots traveled a lot and far – Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Zanzibar, Sicily. “But it doesn’t appeal to me anymore either. Not even for that cottage, even though we have it close. I like it here the most. And I don’t let anything distract me. Not even by television.”

It may surprise someone that Luděk Sobota once played football. But not in the position of goalkeeper, which – in retirement – he played as an official in the District Championship. “I did a lot of sports. I’ve never been so calm before and maybe even got a little angry while playing. Sometimes it was necessary. We even played hockey with Šimek in the Franciscan Garden – between performances. With that rubber wheel to strengthen the hands,” recalls the devotee of walking between the garden pool and the bar at the tennis club.
