Groundbreaking Research: Black Hole Devouring Massive Star Reveals Nitrogen and Carbon Elements

LIVE Techno – Stars are described as donuts where we have to tear it open to see what’s inside. Luckily for astronomers, cosmic events have already done just that when a black hole was found to be tearing a star apart.

It is recorded in a tidal disruption event (TDE). This phenomenon is better known as ‘spagetification’.

In new research published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, astronomers used the TDE to precisely measure the amounts of certain elements – namely nitrogen and carbon – around a black hole to conclude that a massive star three times as massive as the Sun was destroyed there.

The new study is a re-analysis of the X-ray observations of a spectacular TDE known as ASASSN-14li, featuring the most massive star astronomers have ever seen being crushed by a black hole.

When it was discovered in 2014, ASASSN-14li was the closest and brightest TDE to Earth in the last decade, according to the Live Science website, Monday, August 28, 2023.

“ASASSN-14li is very exciting because one of the hardest things about tidal disturbances is being able to measure the mass of the star, as we have done here,” said Enrico Ramirez-Ruiz, an astrophysicist at the University of California.
