CMV-virus
The cytomegalovirus is a virus that is common. Many people in the world come into contact with this virus. Sometimes people get symptoms like the flu, others don’t notice their infection. But if a pregnant woman gets a CMV infection, she can pass the virus on to her baby. And that can be harmful to the child after birth. That’s exactly what happened to baby Jari.
The child is now ten months old, but he already wears hearing aids and cannot see well. Twice he has been rushed to hospital with epilepsy. “He’s only just moved his hands to his face. He can’t hold or grab anything. When you lift it up, it’s very limp. He cannot sit independently or eat normal food without choking,” says mother Anne to the regional broadcaster.
Quest
The first months after birth were one big quest, she says. Although CMV is one of the most common viruses in the Netherlands, the couple found little information about how they could have avoided contracting the virus.
To prevent parents from meeting the same fate, Anne and Nicky want to draw more attention to CMV. Nicky will therefore step on the elliptical trainer in Gemert for twelve hours on September 2 to raise money for more research.
