The Bernese also lose their second friendly in Germany. Despite a good performance, the Mutzen draw the short straw against Mannheim 1:2 after extra time.
It was a completely different setting than on Friday, when the Bernese started in the small training hall of the Kölner Haie in front of a manageable backdrop. The second test game against a DEL team took place in Mannheim’s SAP Arena, and almost 7,000 spectators didn’t want to miss the encounter between the local eagles and SCB. The game was especially special for Mannheim’s head coach Johan Lundskog and his assistant Jeff Hill, since the two had worked in Bern in the previous season.
The guests expressed difficulties at the beginning and were often a step too late. A survived underman game of the SCB then changed the course. From then on, Jussi Tapola’s team had more of the game and good opportunities. But the Mutzen didn’t manage anything countable in the first third, they only recorded two shots against the post.
The Bernese made up for what they had missed in the second third: Romain Loeffel hit a pass from Martin Frk on a power play (26th minute). Shortly before the second break, Mannheim used the free space in four against four field players, defender John Gilmour left Philip Wüthrich with a shot from the corner with no chance of defence.
Because no more goals were scored in the third period, the comparison went into overtime. There, Jordan Murray made the decision on a counterattack.
Immediately after the end of the game, the team started their return journey to Bern. The Mutzen will play the next preparatory game on September 1st in the Wislepark sports center in Worb against the SCL Tigers. Seating for the encounter is sold out, standing room via www.scursellen.ch available.
