Unveiling the Rich History of Caissargues: A Journey Through the ‘Mémoires de Caissargues’

“Mémoires de Caissargues” is a 200-page book retracing the history of the town bordering the city of Nîmes.

Three years of work. This is what it took for the book “Mémoires de Caissargues” to finally be available for sale. Written by journalist Florence Bennouar with the help of many people such as Michel Bass, deputy security officer for the town, these 200 pages are full of anecdotes and secrets about Caissargues, since its independence from Bouillargues le January 7, 1904. “There are even anecdotes that we thought were unthinkable. It makes reading more lively and fun”exclaims Michel Bass.

This book was one of the first projects launched by Olivier Fabregoul, who took office as mayor in 2020: “We said to ourselves that we had to do it quickly, we had people who still remembered the year 1904”, he explains. A realization that the first city councilor had when he went to the funeral of village elders. So as not to lose the precious moments of the town’s history, he therefore had the idea of making a book of them, not in chronological order, but rather in blocks.

My wife’s uncle, who is called André Dayon, kept documents on Caissargues all his life, it allowed me to get my hands on an impressive archive, having been used to write about 60% of the book”, adds Michel Bass. There are also many old photos and historical maps of the village. A book that could perhaps serve as an example for other municipalities in metropolitan Nîmes or Gard, since Olivier Fabregoul would like other communities to follow suit, so that their history continues forever.

The book is available now at the town hall of Caissargues at the price of 25 euros each.
