EC Red Bull Salzburg Suffers 1-0 Defeat to ZSC Lions in Red Bulls Salute

EC Red Bull Salzburg lost 1-0 to the ZSC Lions in the Red Bulls Salute and thus had to admit defeat with the minimal result in the fight for third place in front of 1,750 spectators.

After a powerful early phase by the Lions, the Red Bulls came into play better with a power play (5th) and had the first chances. But Zurich took the lead from a counterattack (8′), Jesper Fröden used a cross pass on the right post, which Salzburg goalkeeper David Kickert (first backup today was the 18-year-old German Academy goalkeeper Valentin Ankirchner, Atte Tolvanen was missing because he had a cold) let it pass had to. The Red Bulls’ combinations got better and better after that, and in some cases convincing chances were created. But Zurich also kept the pressure on in the first fast section and took the 1-0 lead into the first break.

In the second round, a racy game developed in which both teams took turns creating chances and didn’t miss a duel. David Kickert and his opposite number Simon Hrubec regularly excelled at dangerous shots. In another dangerous power play by the Swiss before the second break, the Red Bulls had to stretch a lot, but they prevented a bigger deficit.

In the final third, a strong David Kickert again prevented a bigger deficit with a long 3:5 deficit. The Red Bulls were now less likely to get into good shooting positions and found it difficult to build up against the compact Swiss. From the 50th minute, Salzburg suddenly turned up the heat again, but were unable to get through a number of powerful shots. After a rousing final phase, the score remained 0-1, meaning that the Red Bulls had to yield to the ZSC Lions in the fight for third place.

Salzburg striker Peter Hochkofler

“It wasn’t easy today. They pressed brutally and we had a hard time getting the disc out at the back. All in all, there weren’t enough chances that we could have converted. Defensively it was better than yesterday against Helsinki, but there is still a lot to improve. In any case, we want to take a big step forward before the CHL starts next week.”
