Former Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero assured this Monday in San Sebastián that the PP candidate for the Presidency of the Government, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, is the “most right-wing popular candidate in the entire history of the PP”.
Zapatero has intervened in an electoral act of the PSE-EE in San Sebastián together with the general secretary of the Basque socialists, Eneko Andueza, and the candidate for the Senate Izaskun Gómez.
This act was also attended by the ex-lehendakari and spokesman in Congress Patxi López and the former president of the PSE-EE, Jesús Eguiguren, protagonists with Zapatero of the process of the end of ETA under the socialist governments of Spain and Euskadi, a chapter that they have claimed and remembered today.
Rodríguez Zapatero has focused a large part of his speech on Núñez Feijóo, of whom he has said that “it is the most right-wing of democracy” and “the most right-wing since AP”, while Vox is a “false hare”, so which, he has confessed, worries him less.
“I don’t know if they ever had something of a center – he said about the PP – but they no longer have anything left, they spent years looking for the center and since they did not find it, they turned to the right and to the bottom”.
The “right-wing” of the PP is demonstrated, Zapatero stated, in the “lack of loyalty to the State”, which in his opinion means blocking the renewal of the judiciary, which he has described as an “institutional revolt attitude”, or in his “hold your shoulders” attitude during the pandemic.
It is also evidenced by the questioning of the role of the Post Office in these elections, with which it “attacked the reliability of the electoral process”, as well as by its approval of placing people “who deny vaccines” in positions of responsibility.
He has reproached the PP for insisting on questioning “the truths of democracy”, such as when it insinuates that ETA continues to exist. At this point, he recalled that under his government “ETA ended, ETA surrendered, ETA surrendered”, something of which he feels “very proud”.
He has reflected on the political performance of the Abertzale left in the institutions and has pointed out that the Socialists defended that the end of the violence would mean “the opening of institutional participation to Bildu or whoever, respecting the rules of participation”.
“Because behind there are citizens who have been able to verify that democracy is generous, it is inclusive, that Spain is, that coexistence is possible, that pluralism is respected and that all ideas fit as long as I respect you and you respect me to me”, Zapatero has abounded.
In the same way, he has praised the policy of President Pedro Sánchez in Catalonia, including pardons, a “brave” decision that has led to people no longer talking about the “procés” but about how to improve the economy in that community and relocate it in leadership positions.
