Anesthesia disables consciousness and the ability to perceive pain, but not our dreams.
Some patients experience dreams when they are under anesthesia. 10 to 36 percent of people say they dream during general anesthesia – especially young people, women and patients anesthetized with ketamine.
But that doesn’t mean that anesthesia and sleep are the same.
Sleep does not vary under anesthesia
Researchers generally consider sleep and anesthesia to be two different states, even though they are very similar.
