The Benefits of Napping for Brain Health Revealed in Study

A tasty one nap this in the middle of the day is of course delicious for everyone. Still, you can feel quite guilty if you trade in your normal activities for such a wonderful nap in the afternoon. But no worries! From research published in Sleep HealthIt turns out that a nap is good for you brain. We explain why.

Napping

The health, genetics and the lifestyles of as many as 35,080 people between the ages of 40 and 69 were scrutinized in the study. The researchers from University College London and the University of the Republic in Uruguay tried this way to investigate whether there was a connection between regular ‘nappingduring the day, the cognition and the brain structure.

However, the results were very unexpected. The study shows that there is a connection between regular napping and a larger brain volume. This is important for health and, according to the scientists, can be an indicator of mortality risk.

Siesta

However, this isn’t the first time a study has shown that taking naps during the day is good for your brain. As a study showed Journal of the American Geriatrics Society that people who napped for 30 to 90 minutes were better at remembering words than people who didn’t or who napped longer.

In addition, an additional study of siestas, which in Spanish refers to a ‘rest break’. And what turned out? People who often took a 30-minute siesta were 21 percent less likely to have elevated blood pressure compared to people who didn’t nap at all. Wow!

sleep better

It is therefore clear that an afternoon nap is ideal to recover for a while. However, it is important to keep in mind that napping for a longer period of time can lead to an insufficient night’s sleep or poor sleep quality. So do you want your night’s sleep to improve? Then try – in addition to the afternoon nap – one bedtime routine to build. This means that you go to bed around the same time every night. In addition, create the ideal sleeping environment for yourself, such as: dark, quiet, cool and avoid caffeine.
