The documentary is captured by Oscar-winning filmmakers Trayvon Free and Martin Desmond Roe.
On August 29, 2021, the football team “Bishop Sycamore”, representing a non-existent high school, came to compete for the cup with the “IMG Academy” team. Real high school students won, along with the heightened interest that is “BS High”.
At the center of the fiasco was Bishop Sycamore head coach Roy Johnson, who calls himself an “honest liar.” In the opening minutes of the film, the coach asks the producers if he “looks like a cheater” – a question that “BS High School” will try to answer!
“BS High School” draws on interviews with Johnson, former Bishop Sycamore players and parents, reporters and a former state athletic association investigator to give viewers a glimpse of how Johnson built his high school football team and plotted his path to the televised national tournament.
The man’s idea was so atypical that there was no law against such cheating! Johnson says more than once in the film – if you don’t have money, act like you have it, and a lot of it!

The team was made up of high school football players who had skipped college. Many of these players were African-American, came from disadvantaged backgrounds, and were “bought” by Johnson, promising the necessary support for the next level in their sports careers. Legal, financial and administrative issues were neglected.
The players not only did not attend school and did not train fully, but also lived in hotels, Johnson often did not pay the bills, so the young people were often thrown out on the street. Several young athletes reveal in the film how they were left without shelter, without food, and all this is only the tip of the iceberg.
The 2021 game attracted a lot of media attention as several Bishop Sycamore athletes suffered life-threatening injuries and the team lost the game 58-0.
