Workers and visitors to the Thomas Belt Zoo in Juigalpa, Costa Rica, rejoiced at the birth of a rare albino puma, which is considered an endangered species.

And the Nicaraguan zoo revealed that the puma albino was born a month ago, as it is still protected from the sight of visitors.

“We are taking all measures. To make sure that he is in the best possible health condition alongside his mother,” said Carlos Molina, a veterinarian at the Thomas Belt Zoo in Juigalpa.

And he added, “He is in good health and in good physical condition.” At birth, its fur is light brown or reddish with black spots. The genetic mutation causing white pigmentation is rare in animal species, especially the puma.

“We’re happy about it, because it doesn’t happen often,” Carlos Molina said. The mountain lion is the second largest feline in the Americas after the jaguar, and the fourth largest in the world after the tiger and the lion.

And zookeepers avoid touching the young puma, which grows up with its mother in a cave inside a fenced enclosure. They hope that within two months he will be able to get his first veterinary care.
