Earlier this year, New York banned ChatGPT in its schools over concerns that AI would harm student learning. Finally, the municipality has just lifted the ban in the face of the impressive potential of OpenAI’s chatbot.

OpenAI assures it: ChatGPT will revolutionize education. Integrating the chatbot into school curricula will not happen overnight, however. Fearing that AI is harmful to student learning, some schools have even taken drastic measures. We think in particular of Sciences Po which banned ChatGPT. Same fight in New York schools where the chatbot was previously banned.
Director of public schools in the city, David Banks has just announced that the ban has now been lifted. At the start of the year, schools feared that cheating with ChatGPT would increase and that it would harm students’ critical thinking. “Instinctive fear and risk have overlooked the ability of AI to support students and teachers, as well as the reality our students face in a world where understanding generative AI is crucial”points out David Banks.
ChatGPT is now allowed in New York schools
From now on, the watchword is to realize “a careful exploration and examination of the power and risks of this new technology.” And Banks to cite possible examples of use. Students from Queens “discussed the ethical issues surrounding AI-related biases“, asked questions on ChatGPT before checking the veracity of the answers. For their part, teachers used the chatbot to create lesson plans and notes.
After observing these practices and consulting with industry experts, the decision was made to allow the chatbot. “New York City Public Schools will encourage and support our educators and students as they explore this groundbreaking technology while creating a repository and community to share their discoveries in our schools.” assure Banks.

In particular, educational resources will be provided to teachers (examples of successful implementations, AI toolbox). Instead of acting as if ChatGPT and consorts did not exist, integrating them into the program appears to be a relevant decision. And for good reason, generative AI will continue to impose itself in society. The workers of tomorrow must know how to exploit its potential and identify its excesses.
