Putin’s decree, all paramilitaries will have to swear allegiance
Russian President Vladimir Putin today signed a decree which also requires volunteers who enlist in paramilitary formations – such as Wagner – to take an oath of allegiance to the state. This was reported by the Ria Novosti agency.
The decree provides that members of “voluntary formations and other persons who contribute to the execution of the tasks assigned to the armed forces” and perform functions for “territorial defense” are also required to take an oath in front of the national flag. The decree also establishes the formula of the oath: “I solemnly swear allegiance to the Russian Federation and to observe the Constitution, scrupulously follow the orders of commanders and superiors and conscientiously carry out the tasks assigned to me. I swear to be loyal to the Russian Federation and to courageously defend its independence and its constitutional order”. A law that came into force this year already provided for the transition to the direct dependencies of the Ministry of Defense of the formations of volunteers, including Wagner. It is widely believed that the conflicts between its founder Yevgeny Prigozhin and the Moscow authorities, in particular Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, originated precisely from Prigozhin’s own refusal to comply with the new legislation.
