SG Flensburg-Handewitt underpinned their title ambitions on the first day of the Bundesliga. On Thursday evening, the Schleswig-Holstein team beat their northern rivals, Handball Sport Verein Hamburg, by 37:32 (16:14). TSV Hannover-Burgdorf won 27:25 (16:13) at HC Erlangen.
After the untitled and mixed last season, SG, which was reinforced with Danish internationals Simon Pytlick and Lukas Jorgensen, as expected, did not show a gala performance in the first game of the season. Again and again, however, the team of new coach Nicolej Krickau showed their great class and was always able to increase the number of strokes in critical situations. With a brilliant performance at the beginning of the second period, the three-time champion laid the foundation for the deserved success.

Early red card for HSV handball player Baijens
The spectators in the Flensburg campus hall saw a very intense game from both sides from the start, in which the Hamburg team went about their work a little too robustly. After 17 minutes, three two-minute penalties – two of them for Azat Valiullin on the left at the back – and a red card for center man Dani Baijens had already hit the visitors. Coach Torsten Jansen’s team seemed overly motivated in some scenes. And the 2007 world champion couldn’t be satisfied with his team’s handball performance either.

Flensburg cannot break away
The SG quickly threw themselves into a three-goal lead (6:3/6.) and initially made a more homogeneous and calm impression. But from the middle of the first half, the Schleswig-Holsteiner lost their concentration, while the Hanseatic League stabilized. The result: Casper Ulrich Mortensen equalized for HSVH to make it 11:11 (24th).
However, it was not enough for the guests to take the lead for the second time in the game after Jacob Arenth Lassen made it 1-0 (1st). Flensburg’s strong goalkeeper Kevin Møller and his own nerves fluttering at the end prevented this. After all: At the break, the underdog was only two goals behind the title co-favourites, who increased the number of strokes again in the final minutes, despite the complicated initial phase for him.

SG pulls away after the break
After the change of sides, however, the home side were able to pull away to 19:14 within 180 seconds. Shortly thereafter, Simon Bogetoft Pytlick even gave the hosts a seven-goal lead (23:16/37.), who now played as if detached. Jansen was forced to act. The HSVH coach put Jens Vortmann on for keeper Johannes Bitter, who was unlucky in the second half. And the 36-year-old actually brought his team back into the game with a few saves.

Hamburg was able to reduce the deficit to three goals in the meantime (30:33/54.) and sensed the dawn in the “Hölle Nord” once more. But once again Flensburg managed to take the wind out of the sails of their northern rivals. With a 3:0 run to 36:31 (58th), the SG made the decision.

“Recken” tremble for the away win at Erlangen
The spectators in Nuremberg’s multifunctional arena between Erlangen and Hanover-Burgdorf saw an even more dramatic game. It was 25:25 up to 53 seconds before the end of the game, then the Belarusian national player Uladzislau Kulesh put the “warriors” in the lead. Practically with the final siren, the Lower Saxony were even able to increase the lead to 27:25. The TSV protégés could have spared themselves this nerve thriller. Because in the first section, the North Germans were already on the verge of pulling away decisively early on. But coach Christian Prokop’s team gave up a five-goal lead for a while.
The “warriors” could not break away in the second round either. When Simon Jeppsson gave the hosts the lead for the first time in the whole game in the 55th minute (25:24), the table sixth from the previous season was even threatened with defeat. A bankruptcy was finally averted with a 3-0 run.
