The Ombudsman’s Office and the Protection of Older Adults’ Fundamental Rights

The Ombudsman’s Office, as a National Human Rights Institution, has the duty to defend and protect fundamental rights, considering that older adults are part of a priority care group.

It is unfortunate to see how in the Dominican Republic the fundamental rights of the vast majority of older adults are violated and we do not see one of the bodies in charge of protecting and ensuring that the rights of the elderly are respected by exercising their functions.

The elderly cannot be harmed in their fundamental rights due to negligence, exploitation, violence, nor can they be punished or victims of any attack, whether by action or omission.

In addition, the Elderly have the right to: a life with quality, without violence and without discrimination, to dignified and appropriate treatment in any legal proceeding.
