Time for squirrels is over!

Sandra Iva, member of the Youth Council of the Estonian Central Party

Prime Minister Kaja Kallas should consider resigning due to her husband’s involvement in a company doing business in Russia. Ethically dubious situations raise questions about the reliability of Kaja Kallas as prime minister, and the question arises whether such a person can continue working as prime minister at all.

The recent revelation that the husband of Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas owns a stake in a company that does business with Russia calls into question the Prime Minister’s ability to lead the country impartially and raises doubts about possible conflicts of interest. As the Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja Kallas has a great responsibility in leading the country, and her activities should be transparent, reliable and in line with the interests of the country. In a situation where her husband owns a stake in a company doing business in Russia, suspicions of political bias may arise. Consequently, Kaja Kalla could consider resigning in order to maintain the credibility of the state and avoid suspicions.

On the one hand, it is natural that politicians may have family members involved in business. But the position of Prime Minister requires special attention to such situations to avoid situations where personal interests may affect the interests of the country. Relations between Russia and Estonia have historically been difficult, and having economic ties to Russia can raise questions about political influence and conflict of interest. Especially in today’s situation, where last year, under the leadership of Kaja Kallas, the government allegedly ordered Estonian Railways and Operail to exit the business in Belarus and Russia.

In order to maintain credibility and avoid potential conflicts of interest, Prime Minister Kallas could consider the following steps:

The Prime Minister should be given a public explanation of the situation and explain how she intends to ensure that her husband’s business activities do not influence her political decisions. So far, Kaja Kalla has not used opportunities to give good explanations to the press. On the contrary, the explanations given at the press conference rather raise even more questions, to which he does not give answers.

There is a need to resign! If the situation seems to be against the interests of the Estonian state or if the public has serious doubts, the prime minister could consider resigning in order not to damage the country’s image or trust in his leadership. Resigning can be a responsible decision that helps avoid possible confusion, scandals and loss of trust. This shows that Kallas cares about the image of the Estonian state and is ready to make personal sacrifices to ensure the stability and reliability of the state. Resignation would also allow him to focus on clarifying the situation and separating his and his family’s business relationships from running state affairs. This is a really difficult decision, and Kallas should consider all possible consequences and consult with his party colleagues and relatives. It is important that the decision is made thoughtfully and that the interests of the Estonian state come first. Resignation is currently one way of demonstrating these values.

In summary, it is important that the Prime Minister understands what happened and acts transparently, thoughtfully and responsibly in the current situation. The country’s leaders must be an example of putting the country’s interests first and, if necessary, make personal sacrifices in order to maintain trust among the people.

Here, I support Tanel Kiike, the chairman of the Riigikogu’s Center Party faction, who announced that the Center Party has decided to start negotiations with other political parties in order to show no confidence in Prime Minister Kaja Kalla.
