Justice is going to prosecute a man who would have sold the suicide powder Drug X via his own website. The Public Prosecution Service (OM) confirms this after reporting in de Volkskrant. 76-year-old Tom de M. from Castricum is suspected of money laundering and assisted suicide of seven people.
These seven people died in 2021 and 2022. According to the Public Prosecution Service, more than 500 people ordered De M. Middel X. This refers to a number of toxic substances. They are used by the chemical industry, among others, but also as a means of suicide. The suspect has earned “a very large amount” with the sale, says the OM.
Tom de M. sold Drug X via the website deliveryxpres.com, writes de Volkskrant. The deadly drug, according to the newspaper, was listed under “hobby chemicals” and buyers could purchase it in two-gram portions. Upon confirmation of the order, buyers were notified “[Middel X] for pest control,” the newspaper reports. The man is said to have acted out of idealistic motives.
On track by postal package
The case came to light after a report of criminal assisted suicide in Zeeland and a suspicious death in Breda in 2021. The OM then started an investigation, which showed that Substance X had been used in the suicides. This was ordered online. The Public Prosecution Service tracked down Tom de M. via a postal package.
The man from Castricum became early last year arrested. At the time, the Public Prosecution Service spoke of involvement in four suicides, but could not rule out that there were more. After another year and a half of research, Tom de M. is therefore linked to seven suicides.
It is the second case in the large-scale judicial investigation into the provision of Substance X. Last month, Alex S. from Eindhoven was sentenced to 3.5 years in prison because he was involved in assisted suicide for ten people.
Almost all suspects investigated by the Public Prosecution Service are members of Coöperatie Laatste Wil (CLW). This organization presented Drug X in 2017 as a humane means of suicide, even though it can take up to 40 hours for someone to die. CLW fights for the right of people to a humane means to end life independently, without a doctor.
