Research into the possible relationship between pneumonia and living near goat farms has experienced significant delays in recent years. In the autumn of 2024, the necessary clarity must now be obtained for both local residents and goat farmers.
The Livestock Farming and Health III (VGOIII) program has been running since 2018. It is a follow-up to previous research that showed that people living near goat farms are more likely to suffer from pneumonia.
The VGOIII study must now answer the why question. Why do local residents suffer more from pneumonia and is this due to the proximity of the goat farm or is there another cause?
It was already known last year that there were far too few patients for one of the components of this study. 800 patients would have to participate and there were only 50 at the time. The expectation was that it would eventually become 150.
Gain additional knowledge
The researchers have now found a method to gain additional knowledge about the possible causes of the pneumonias. They assume that they will be able to complete all the various sub-studies in the autumn of 2024 and present the results at the end of 2024.
The lack of scientific insights leaves all those involved with unanswered questions. LTO therefore considers it important that local residents and also goat farmers and their families obtain clarity about whether or not there is a demonstrable link between goat farms and pneumonia.
