Controversial Case: André and Monique Fined for Taking Unapproved Vacation with Son

André and Monique applied for vacation for April last year after oral permission from the school attendance officer. This was then rejected by the education officer. Yet they went. With this they took longer than ten days off for little Dré and they are therefore fined.

The substantive handling of the case took place behind closed doors after consultation, partly because of the age of 6-year-old Dré. The ruling is public.

The couple immediately left the court after the substantive treatment. So they didn’t wait for the verdict. Nienke Hoogervorst, the couple’s lawyer, has informed the ANP that they will not be present at the verdict ‘due to other agreements’.

Parents who keep children out of school without permission are usually fined. In exceptional cases, parents receive a prison sentence, but that was not in line with André and Monique’s expectations.

When André and Monique took their son on holiday, the boy was five years old and therefore of compulsory school age. Because there was no permission from the school, the singer and his partner avoided compulsory education. The school must then report this to the attendance officer.

André already responded to the case against RTL Boulevard a few weeks ago. He then called it ‘not neat’. However, he had no regrets. “Because of that journey we are now like this and I have the happiest child on earth,” he said. “I shouldn’t really say it, but I bear the consequences with a lot of love.”
