KOMPAS.com – Forming a colony on Mars is humanity’s most ambitious mission yet. Planet Mars is a long-term human exploration mission in outer space that is being prepared.
In the future, colonies on Mars will help humans explore the wider universe.
However, the question is how many people are needed to start a colony on the red planet?
To find possible answers, the research team created a model that simulated Mars colonies.

Quoted from Phys, Thursday (24/8/2023) in the simulation, the researchers focused on how many people are needed to create a viable colony, as well as what characteristics of people are likely to contribute to the success of the human colony on Mars.
To achieve that goal, they used data from the past, such as questionnaires filled out by groups aboard the International Space Station or people living close together at the North Pole over months.
Researchers also attempted to consider known character traits of people such as stress resistance, social skills, and levels of neuroticism.
Create an early colony on Mars
To realize this long-term mission on Mars, the research team ran five simulations, each modeling 28 years of colony life on Earth, while changing factors such as the number of people in a Martian colony.

Researchers from George Mason University later found that the minimum number of people needed to start a colony on Mars was 22.
In addition, researchers found people with agreeable personalities were more likely to survive and thrive on missions to Mars.
Meanwhile, people with neurotic personalities are more likely than others to fail missions and die earlier, jeopardizing the overall success of the mission.
Researchers want to highlight the importance of considering human behavior as part of future space exploration, reported by Gizmodo.
“We wanted to show that if we ignore the social, behavioral and psychological aspects of space exploration, we can be very wrong in estimating, predicting and projecting,” said Anamaria Berea, professor of computational and data science at George Mason University.
The results of modeling to determine how many individuals to form a colony on Mars have been published on the arXiv preprint server.
