Sony Announces PlayStation Portal: A New Game Streaming Device for PS5 Games

KOMPAS.com – Sony officially announced the presence of their newest portable game device, namely the PlayStation Portal, on Wednesday (23/8/2023). Unlike ordinary handheld game devices, the PlayStation Portal is made specifically for streaming PlayStation 5 (PS5) games.

This means that PlayStation Portal users cannot download and install games on the device. PlayStation Portal users can only play games that are already installed on PlayStation 5 via an internet connection.

The PlayStation Portal itself was not created as a new console from the start, but was positioned as a complementary device to the PS5. This device is designed for users who want to play PS5 games, but don’t want to stare at the television screen for a long time.

The PlayStation Portal creation project itself was announced by Sony since last May. At that time, Sony used the name “Project Q” for the device code.

The PlayStation Portal has a similar design to the Nintendo Switch. The PlayStation Portal has a large screen flanked by two gamepads or controllers.

The LCD screen has a span of 8 inches and can display images with a resolution of 1,080 pixels with a frame rate of 60 fps.

Speaking of design, the PlayStation Portal gamepad or controller adopts a design language similar to the PS5 controller, aka DualSense. However, the shape looks more bongsor.

Both sides of the PlayStation Portal gamepad support haptic feedback vibration effects and adaptive triggers, the same as the sensations presented by DualSense. Apart from that, the PlayStation Portal can also play media through the screen, just like the PS5.

To run or play games, PlayStation Portal must be connected to a stable Wi-Fi internet network so that the gaming experience is smoother.

Sony recommends that the minimum internet speed that is suitable for playing games on the PlayStation Portal is 5 Mbps. However, the recommended internet speed is 15 Mbps.

“Playstation Portal will connect remotely to your PS5 via a Wi-Fi network so you can immediately play PS5 directly on your Playstation Portal,” explained Vice President of Platform Excercise at Sony Interactive Entertainment, Hideaki Nishino, as quoted by KompasTekno from The Verge, Thursday (24/8/2023).

The PlayStation Portal has a 3.5mm audio jack. However, the PlayStation Portal is not equipped with a Bluetooth connection, so users cannot use ordinary wireless headphones or similar devices.

However, this device is equipped with PlayStation Link, a wireless technology designed to provide low latency and lossless audio. Sony has also released a headset or device that supports this technology.

Regarding power, Sony has not further disclosed the capacity of its new device.

However, some predict that the PlayStation Portal will be similar to DualSense, around 7-9 hours of use. Sony also hasn’t detailed the other specifications yet.

It should be noted, although the PlayStation Portal is made for streaming games, this device cannot be used to play games through the PlayStation Plus (PS Plus) Premium cloud gaming subscription service.

This means that the games you want to play on the PlayStation Portal must actually be installed on the user’s PS5 console.
