“It really stinks,” says Hilda le Clercq. She lives on Oostvest, where mortality has now expanded to. Le Clercq hopes that the municipality will do something about it. She herself has an idea of what needs to be done. “There should be a fountain here. So that there is more movement in the water.” She says it helps with the smell. “Yes, because at the Stone Bridge it doesn’t smell and there is also a fountain.”
Meanwhile, the Goese fishing association EVHG, which leases the water from the municipality, has taken pictures of the dead fish. “They are mainly carp,” says Josmar van Belzen. He is secretary at the association and is involved in the problems. “We think it is about the Koi Herpes Virus. We see that it spreads mainly through waterfowl. We are currently investigating what solution is possible for this. For an ordinary pond you can think of a quarantine tank for carp, but for such large waters that is not a solution so we are now thinking about that.”
