The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said, “At around 3:50 a.m. on the same day, we detected a ‘North Korean space launch vehicle’ that was launched southward from Dongchang-ri, North Pyongan Province, and passed over the high seas west of Ieo Island.”
“The ROK military is maintaining a full readiness posture while closely cooperating with the US while raising its alert posture,” he added.
The Japanese government said on the same day that North Korea fired a projectile believed to be a ballistic missile.
According to Japanese media, the Japanese government said in a statement, “At 4 am on the 24th, a North Korean missile flew toward the Pacific Ocean.”
Media reported that the Japanese government issued an emergency warning through the warning broadcasting system to evacuate indoors to residents of Okinawa Prefecture, and then lifted it.
Earlier, North Korea announced that it would launch a military reconnaissance satellite between the 24th and 31st.
It has been about 85 days since North Korea launched a space launch vehicle on May 31 last year.
At the time, North Korea launched a rocket “Chollima Type 1” carrying a military reconnaissance satellite “Molligyeong-1” from the launch site in Dongchang-ri, Cheolsan-gun, North Pyongan Province, but the rocket lost momentum and crashed into the West Sea.
