The Surrender of Russian Mi-8 Helicopter in Ukraine: Deliberate Act or Navigation Mishap?

A number of observers of the war initiated by Russia, as well as some Russian/Belarusian opposition info-resources, have started to share information about a few weeks old event – the surrender of a Mi-8 helicopter captured by the Russian forces.

The story spread by the Ukrainian side is that the helicopter crew of the Russian forces deliberately planned a way to safely arrive in Ukraine with the aircraft and surrender, providing themselves with special conditions and treatment from the actual opponent.

According to this version, the Mi-8 crew has deliberately cut off communications with Russia and landed at the airfield in Poltava.

Information resource “Nexta” also adds that the helicopter allegedly contained a range of spare parts for other aircraft, specifically parts of Su-27 and Su-30 fighters.

There are different versions about the fate of the crew. Some sources claim that the pilot survived and his family was already taken to Ukraine, but the rest of the crew was destroyed.

Meanwhile, Russian “Telegram” resources, which review the events of the war, comment on what happened in a completely different way.

It says the helicopter crew got lost and had navigation/communications problems unrelated to any possible plans to escape.

When landing in Ukraine, the crew was opened fire on, only the commander survived.

On the Russian side, it is also committed to “not to spread any other versions”, except this one, which is acceptable to the aggressor country, of course.
