Pension Contributions for Students: Exploring the Popularity of Student Jobs

Those who have worked for many years go into their well-deserved retirement. As a rule, several decades of work go by before the money has been paid in full. Students, on the other hand, enter the workforce a little later, but the same applies to them.

Nevertheless, in some cases they have to pay into the pension while they are still studying. Because even with holiday, mini or part-time jobs, some money is spent on RV contributions. You can find out when this is the case here.

Pension: Student jobs more popular than ever

Anyone who studies often has to deal with all kinds of costs: semester fees, rent and, for some, even fuel costs for the car. Of course, a part-time job while studying is worthwhile. After all, mini-jobs are very popular. “At the end of June 2023, over 6,955,900 mini-jobbers were registered with the Minijob-Zentrale. At the end of March 2023 there were a total of almost 6,732,900,” said the German pension insurance in a press release.

But they are often not exempt from pension contributions, as reported by the German pension insurance. Anyone who works for an unlimited period and earns a maximum of 520 euros a month is subject to compulsory insurance. With a minimal insurance contribution, you acquire all the benefits of statutory pension insurance. The contribution is currently 3.6 percent of income.

Pension: Can you free yourself?

If the employment relationship is limited to a maximum of three months or 70 working days per calendar year, students remain exempt from insurance. No contributions have to be paid during a compulsory internship either. Working hours and earnings are irrelevant in both cases.

Of course, students – like all mini-jobbers – can also be exempted from compulsory insurance. But then their share of the contribution is eliminated and they then only acquire a proportionate contribution period in the pension insurance.
