Importance of Bivalent Vaccine to Prevent Complications from the COVID-19 Variant EG.5 (Eris)

The rapid advance of a new variant of COVID-19, called EG.5 or “Eris”, has put the health authorities on alert. In this context, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) recalled the importance of being up to date with the bivalent vaccine to avoid serious complications caused by this virus.

According to the “Protocol for the application of the bivalent booster dose for the year 2023”, adults over 60 years of age should receive a second booster of the bivalent vaccine, if four months have passed since the previous dose.

People with some comorbidity (diabetes, heart disease, people with HIV, transplant recipients, etc.) should do the same, who should also receive two boosters at a two-month interval.

The sector explained that, according to the protocol, girls and boys between the ages of 6 months and 5 years who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19 must receive two doses of the bivalent vaccine at an interval of 28 days. If the minor was previously vaccinated with one or two monovalent doses, she can also receive the bivalent.

In the case of children older than 5 years with two previous monovalent vaccines, the bivalent can be applied 2 months after the last dose.

So far this year, 30,000 cases of COVID-19 and more than 2,000 deaths have been reported in the country. Roger Araujo, an infectious disease specialist at the INS, said that the bivalent vaccine helps reduce the chances of hospitalization and death in older adults.
