At least 17 construction workers were killed in the Indian state of Mizoram when part of a railway bridge under construction collapsed. According to local authorities, 35 to 40 people were on the bridge at the time of the collapse. It is feared that the death toll will rise.
Rescue workers and investigators are present at the scene of the accident. Indian Prime Minister Modi testified on X (formerly Twitter) expressed condolences to the bereaved.
According to the police, people living near the bridge immediately helped to take the injured to the hospital. It is still unknown how the bridge collapsed.

The railway bridge was part of a project by Indian Railways to improve access to the northeast of the country. A river was diverted for the construction of the bridge. At its highest point, the bridge would be 104 meters, but that point had not yet been reached.
According to Prime Minister Modi, the victims will receive compensation from the national disaster fund. Railway Minister Vaishnaw said on X that it concerns an amount of 11,185 euros for surviving relatives and 2,231 euros for seriously injured people.
